Family & Parenting

I grew up watching television families who seemed to have an answer for just about everything. Ward and June Cleaver, Andy Taylor, Charles and Caroline Ingalls, and the Walton family all had their own ways of raising children, handling disagreements, and teaching right from wrong. Some of their advice was wonderful. Some of it makes me shake my head now that I'm older.

One thing I always appreciated about those shows was that parents weren't necessarily perfect, and neither were their children. There were arguments, misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and plenty of opportunities for someone to learn a lesson. Sometimes the adults learned more than the kids did.

Here at CouchDegree.com, I revisit television families from different generations to explore parenting, family relationships, discipline, responsibility, and the values we pass along to our children. I'll look at what these shows got right, what hasn't aged so well, and what we can still learn from the families who spent so many years in our living rooms.
